I highly recommend the graphic novel Trese to anyone who’s looking for a Filipino monster fix this Halloween.

“When the sun sets in the city of Manila, don’t you dare make a wrong turn and end up in that dimly-lit side of the metro, where aswang run the most-wanted kidnapping rings, where kapre are the kingpins of crime, and engkantos slip through the cracks and steal your most precious possessions. When crime takes a turn for the weird, the police call Alexandra Trese.”

Trese is a horror/crime komiks title created by writer Budjette Tan and artist Kajo Baldisimo. It follows the story of Alexandra Trese, a mysterious detective who deals with crimes of supernatural origin mainly occurring in the capital region of the Philippines.

What you get with Trese:
  - well-rounded characters of color
  - wonderfully complex female protagonist
  - plenty of gray morality
  - hot twin bodyguards
  - monsters you’ve probably never heard of before

You don’t have to speak Filipino or know of Filipino culture to appreciate it, as it’s in English. Hell, Neil Gaiman himself is a fan of the comic.

It tends to remind people of Constantine, Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, and Supernatural all at once, but I promise you Trese is something else.

Here is where you can read the first issue of Trese for free - but please if you enjoyed it, considered actually buying the series.
